City Bird
A Poem
Like the city bird I've nested in scaffolds, Landing here among the iron lane, Above the echoed soles of passers-by, Beneath an unpredicted rain. I've eaten of the urban bug That clings so close to its phosphorescent light. And yes, I watch, I witness the growling, hopeless night. My ears ring from something grinding stone For I know better then most tend, That my world is reconstruction, Always tearing at its end— Always cracking down the middle, sure. But some must give it chance, To live here, I mean. Making homes of this impermanence. And so I'll build upon a building meant to fall Content to breath this dusty air. I'll learn to love this wet concrete Cause at least I'll leave some footprints there.
