Sonnet 018
Of Flame and Time
O flame of heart that burns and wavers time,
So fanned and flared by waitings quiet wind;
The chill that lingers, smokes, and bristles chime
And sound, its hollow tones within now send
Your sparks to catching limbs outside our place.
Let char and dark invade its proper birth,
But keep it locked behind the metal face
That holds your heat in rightful passioned mirth.
For nothing is so cold as missing air,
Which once embroiled has now grown rather dim,
And yet, it is this longing that is fair—
These smoldered coals which tell an ancient whim.
Ah yes, the better days do warm and grin
So blaze and blaze on, but keep your fire in.
